Red Tag Repair

Red Tag: Causes

Average Costs, Safety Tips and Hiring a Professional

Gas Meter Reset

If the gas company has found a leak on your side of the meter they will remove the meter and issue a "red-tag". This means you will need to have a licensed gas contractor fix the leak and perform a pressure test (merc test). This requires a permit and an inspection from the city or state inspector. The inspector will also require that all the gas appliances be brought up to code. When the inspector approves the pressure test the gas company will reset the gas meter.
If the gas leak is on the gas company's side of the meter they will fix it at their own expense.

Long term non-use of gas or vacancy

If the gas has been off for over a year the gas company will require a pressure test. This will require a permit and an inspection from the city or state inspector (only a licensed gas contractor can pull a permit and order the inspection). This is typical of foreclosed houses. We charge $300 to pull the permit and do the pressure test assuming there are no leaks and there are no code issues(Albuquerque only).

Safety Tips

Always leave the home immediately if you suspect a gas leak. It’s better to be safe than sorry. If the gas company is unable to respond promptly, call the fire department. Firefighters are trained to respond to natural gas leaks. Never use any sort of appliance or electronic device if you suspect a gas leak - one spark can cause an explosion. This includes cell phones, garage doors, televisions and light switches. Never try to locate the source of the leak, shut off the gas supply or perform the repair yourself. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous. Call in a trained professional. This probably goes without saying, but don’t smoke or light a match.

Finding a Professional

Repairing a gas leak is absolutely a job for a trained professional, but how do you know the person you call is truly qualified? Here are some tips: Only hire a licensed plumber or HVAC technician. Ask for proof that the person is licensed to work with natural gas lines, and check with your state’s licensing or plumbing board to make sure the license is active. Throw out any bids that come in suspiciously high or low. Often, companies with unusually low bids are cutting corners, and that could compromise your safety. Consider hiring a plumber or HVAC professional who specializes in gas line repair. These professionals work with gas lines every day, so they know exactly what to do to keep you safe. Repair Costs

The price to fix the leak depends mainly on the location of the leak. A leak in a flexible gas line to a dryer for example would cost around $100, a leak under the slab of your house may require re-piping your house which could cost thousands.
